Overview

A strategic planning scheme sets the long-term direction for growth, land use and infrastructure in a region. Every development application and rezoning decision is assessed against the scheme in force for its region, and schemes are reviewed periodically to reflect population growth, new settlement and changing community needs.

Each scheme is prepared in consultation with system governments, colony authorities and the community, and is approved by the Secretary before it takes effect. The table below lists the current status of each region's scheme.

How schemes are made

A scheme review begins with a discussion paper setting out population, environmental and infrastructure evidence for the region. A draft scheme is then prepared and opened for public comment, typically for eight weeks, before being finalised and submitted to the Secretary for approval.
