Regions

The department plans for four regions across the Commonwealth, each with its own mix of growth, industry and settlement patterns.

A spiral galaxy seen from deep space.

Every planning decision the department makes starts with region: what's growing, what's ageing, and what infrastructure it will need next. Jump to a region below, or read on for the full picture.

Core Systems

Core Systems is home to the Commonwealth capital and the most densely populated worlds in the union. Growth here is steady rather than rapid, and planning is focused on urban renewal, transport capacity and keeping housing supply close to jobs. Most of the department's metropolitan planning schemes apply within this region.

Inner Colonies

The Inner Colonies sit within easy hyperlane reach of Core Systems and have absorbed much of the Commonwealth's population growth over the past decade. Settlements here are well serviced by existing transport corridors, and current work is focused on upgrading freight capacity as local industry expands.

Frontier Territories

The Frontier Territories are the fastest-growing part of the Commonwealth, with new colonies establishing along recently opened corridors. The department's Connected Colonies Program funds the transport, utilities and community infrastructure these settlements need as they grow from outposts into towns.

Outer Rim Region

Settlements on the Outer Rim are the most remote in the Commonwealth, often several hyperlane jumps from the nearest major colony. Housing supply and service delivery are the region's biggest challenges, and a dedicated strategy sets out how the department will support sustainable growth there.
